Environmental and dam effects on cannibalism in Wistar rat litters Biological Sciences
Tarôco, Graziela; Gaya, Leila de Genova; Resende, Daniela Regina; Santos, Ivan Carlos dos; Madureira, Ana Paula.
The factors related to cannibalistic behavior of dams in a Wistar rat colony are identified and analyzed. The maternal genetic effects were tested as a random effect by the method of generalized linear models. The season at parturition, the dam´s age at parturition and the density of the room at parturition were tested as fixed effects, whereas the litter size at birth was tested as a co-variable. The genetic effect of the dam was significant for the number of cannibalized pups. Although the season at parturition, the dam´s age and room density on the day of parturition were not individually significant (p > 0.05), most of the interactions between the variation sources were significant (p < 0.05). Cannibalism occurred mostly in dams aged over 241...

Hematological and biochemical profiles of rats (Rattus norvegicus) kept under microenvironmental ventilation system Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
TEIXEIRA,Maria Araújo; CHAGURI,Luziane do Carmo Andrade Guinski; CARISSIMI,André Silva; SOUZA,Nívea Lopes de; MORI,Claudia Madalena Cabrera; GOMES,Valéria Maria Wanderley; POLI NETO,Adelino; NONOYAMA,Kimiyo; MERUSSE,José Luiz Bernardino.
Previous studies reported that rats (Rattus norvegicus) kept under microenvironmental ventilation systems (MEV) present better productive and health parameters when compared to animals kept under general diluting ventilation (GDV). The objective of the present research trial was to evaluate hematological and biochemical profiles of rats kept under MVS. In order to achieve this objective, two different trials were designed: Trail 1 (E1), in which it was evaluated the reproductive performance of males and females submitted to two different air speed limits - FV1, from 0.03 to 0.26 m / sec and FV2, from 0.27 to 0.80 m / sec. In Trial 2 (E2) it was evaluated different bed change intervals (3, 5, 7 and 9 days), for males kept under constant air speed (0.5 m /...

Plastination Technique in Laboratory Rats: an Alternative Resource for Teaching, Surgical Training and Research Development International Journal of Morphology
Ottone,Nicolás Ernesto; Cirigliano,Vanina; Lewicki,Marianela; Bianchi,Homero F; Aja-Guardiola,Santiago; Algieri,Rubén Daniel; Cantin,Mario; Fuentes,Ramón.
Today, alternatives methods are developed for the use of laboratory animals for teaching, research and surgical training. In our work we present a novel alternative to the use of rats, by developing a technique of plastination at room temperature. High-quality rat preparations from the anatomical dissection point of view were obtained, in order to indefinitely preserve them dry, the thoracic and abdominal organs conserve its natural volume and shape, maintaining their texture and color. No odors or hassles and toxic vapors of conventional preserving agents were found. This technique allows the collection of dry, completely biosafe and durable specimens in a short time and with excellent quality. Plastination in laboratory rats complements undergraduate and...

Training Course on Laboratory Animal Science MV&Z
Tada Fonseca Brasil Antiorio, Ana; Cintra, Luciana; Carolina Millán Olivato, Márcia; de Rosa Trotta, Mauricio; Regina de Luca, Rosália; Albert Zanatto, Dennis; Madalena Cabrera Mori, Claudia.
Laboratory Animal Science requires a multidisciplinary approach. Professionals working with laboratory animals should have the knowledge on how to choose the right animal model and its speciesspecific ethological needs, how to choose the best anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia protocol, how to refine the care procedures including recognition and treatment of pain in order to improve the animals welfare , as well as how to design an experimental and to conduct statistical analysis of the experimental data. To meet these needs, professionals who perform, take part, supervise experimental procedures on animals, or take care of laboratory animals, should receive training, with programs aimed to implement the 3Rs and to promote the welfare of laboratory...
